Governor Murphy nominated Hoffman in June to replace Justice Lee Solomon after he reached the mandatory retirement age of 70 in August.
Hoffman's approval would maintain the court traditional partizan balance.
He is an unaffiliated voter but served as acting AG for three years under Republican Governor Chris Christie, though he was never officially confirmed to the Post as AG.
Hoffman led efforts to equip police with body worn cameras and established a new directive on police involved shootings.
He left the role in 2016 to become general counsel and senior vice president at Rutgers University.
After today's unanimous vote, Hoffman's nomination now goes to the full Senate for confirmation before he can be sworn in as associate Justice.
