Clair River, which is right across from Canada, and we were at a shop that we often go to in Canada, and they had these two little pitchers, and they were $30 Canadian, which at that time was probably $20 U.S., and, uh, so my wife thought, "Oh, we didn't really need them."
And, but I said, "Let's buy them," and so we did.
APPRAISER: And when was that time?
How long ago did you find them?
GUEST: Probably 12, 15 years ago.
APPRAISER: Okay.
GUEST: Kind of when majolica was just becoming popular here.
APPRAISER: Well, you're right, it was.
GUEST: (clears throat) APPRAISER: And, uh, since then, it's been a very active market, perhaps one of the most active of all, uh, collectible areas in the United States.
Uh, Victorian Majolica is, uh, the name given to this kind of very richly colored, usually earthenware, that was introduced in Britain at the Great Exhibition in 1851.
And these little pair of jugs are very unusual in two respects.
First of all, they're made by the Royal Worcester company, who specialized in making porcelain-- not earthenware and not majolica.
But they did make a small range of majolica, mostly in the 1870s.
Um, what's also unusual about these, and what I think gives them the most value and collectible interest, is that they are miniatures.
Uh, the Royal Worcester company made a larger version of this jug.
They made it in a version about eight or nine inches tall.
Uh, but miniatures of anything in majolica are extremely rare and unusual.
I wouldn't be surprised today, uh, if these would bring at least $600 or maybe $800, uh, each... GUEST: Each?
APPRAISER: ...at auction.
GUEST: (laughing): Each?
APPRAISER: Each.
At auction.
GUEST: Oh, that, that's terrific.
APPRAISER: Well... GUEST: Well, then, my $30 investment was good, and my wife, I can say I was right this time.
