Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipnearly two years since the U.S polled the last of our troops from Afghanistan the United States has seen an influx of immigrants and refugees from the country well now the Biden Administration is offering a temporary fix starting this summer for those who remain in limbo it's known as a re-parole process and it allows certain refugees to remain in the country as long as they qualify for Asylum senior correspondent Joanna Gage spoke with one Afghan parolee who risked it all to be here and the organization working to get others settled I do have a permit that I got a few years ago and it's going to be expired like in a couple months Saeed Nori is coming to the end of his parole protection granted when he and his family escaped Afghanistan two years ago during operation allies welcome the final evacuation of the U.S military from Afghanistan we did have moved to America and it was the biggest decision of our lives and basically the main thing that is my green card and the process is going very slowly because because uh me and people like me are worried that we kind of don't belong here and we can be kicked out more than 13 000 Afghans were temporarily housed at Joint Base McGuire Dick's Lakehurst during operation allies welcome hundreds resettled here in New Jersey Nori is one of the more than 70 000 total Afghan Parolees who could have their temporary status extended under a new plan announced by the Biden Administration that allows them to reapply for parole or re-parole under parole which is um a tool that provides only limited protections limited benefits access to work optimization but it's temporary only lasts two years and now we're almost two years after the evacuation which which occurred in the fall of 2021 and so many Afghan Parolees are facing the pending expiration of their parole Church World Service or CWS has been working to reach as many Afghan Parolees as they can to help them through the arduous re-application process I'll be going over what Repro is what the application process is and all the different nuances that they need to be familiar with and then throughout the months of July and August I will be working um in various Clinic models um to provide assistance to the clients so we're going to be doing clinics with uh volunteers from my colleagues from law students in the area uh firms that we partner with um to provide assistance but after kids are saying the American government owes these Parolees permanent status because of the role they played in helping the U.S military in Afghanistan you have people who were risking their lives every single day who may have been interpreters so that where whenever the US military went in Afghanistan they were able to communicate with the locals and who were soldiers they were on duty on the front lines with American American soldiers fighting against the Taliban trying to protect their country there's a bipartisan bill that's stalled in Congress called the Afghanistan adjustment act that would provide special immigrant status for those Afghan Parolees some republicans in Congress say they haven't been vetted enough to provide that permanent status we reached out to all three of New Jersey's Republican representatives and haven't yet heard back but CWS employees reject that notion they know who they brought in like they might not be able to say that they have done the same checks that they do through the Asylum process so they might have extra checks to do but I don't think it's fair for them to say that people have not been properly vetted because they went through multiple multiple vetting processes to even even be here and so they the government has a sense of who they have here with them when we evacuated uh folks from Vietnam after the fall of Saigon we brought them in under parole and then swiftly passed an adjustment act and it's time now almost two years again after the evacuation to provide a clear and stable and secure path to permanent status for for Afghan evacuees many like Nori will see their parole expire this summer even if they've completed their re-parole application leaving them unsure of their future for NJ Spotlight news I'm Joanna gagis [Music]
