A young South Carolina Army veteran, Neill Macaulay, joined Castro’s 26th of July Movement in 1958 out of a belief in its human rights cause. He endured combat and rose to a rebel officer overseeing firing squads. After briefly receiving a farm when the revolution succeeded, he and his wife Nancy ultimately left Cuba as the political climate shifted, forever shaped by the experience.
